A Defining Chapter in McMow Art Glass History

Throughout the history of McMow Art Glass, there have been projects that challenged us, inspired us, and ultimately transformed the way we think about art, architecture, and design. Few projects embody that spirit more than our collaboration with fashion icon and visionary designer Gianni Versace on his legendary South Beach residence.

For founder and president Shanon Materio, the opportunity to work alongside Versace was more than a commission—it was a masterclass in creativity, attention to detail, and the limitless possibilities of bespoke design.

Over the course of nearly two years, McMow Art Glass worked closely with Versace to create custom stained glass installations throughout the property. This was not a project confined to a single room or architectural feature. Art glass became an integral part of the home’s identity, woven into the fabric of the residence and incorporated into nearly every corner of the estate.

Today, the property is known around the world as Casa Casuarina, one of the most recognizable and photographed homes in America. Countless television shows, films, magazines, and documentaries have featured the iconic mansion, celebrating its opulence, artistry, and unmistakable aesthetic.

But long before it became a cultural landmark, it was a deeply personal project for Versace—a place where every detail mattered.

Pushing Creative Boundaries

Working with Gianni Versace pushed McMow Art Glass into new creative territory.

Versace approached design without limitations. Every room, every surface, and every decorative element was considered an opportunity for artistic expression. His vision challenged conventional ideas about how stained glass could be incorporated into luxury interiors.

Rather than treating art glass as a decorative accent, Versace embraced it as an essential design element. The collaboration encouraged McMow Art Glass to think beyond traditional applications and explore new ways to integrate handcrafted glass into a cohesive architectural experience.

The result was a collection of bespoke installations that complemented the home’s rich colors, intricate patterns, imported materials, and extraordinary attention to detail.

It was a project that expanded not only the creative boundaries of the studio but also reinforced the belief that art glass could play a central role in defining luxury environments.

Every Detail Matters

One of the enduring lessons from the Versace project was the importance of craftsmanship at every level.

Versace’s passion for perfection extended far beyond fashion. He believed every detail should contribute to the overall experience of a space. Whether selecting fabrics, finishes, furnishings, mosaics, or art glass, he approached each decision with extraordinary intention.

That philosophy aligned perfectly with McMow’s commitment to handcrafted artistry.

Every stained glass element created for the residence was designed specifically for its setting. No detail was overlooked. No piece was replicated. Each installation was custom-made to contribute to the home’s overall narrative and visual impact.

This dedication to bespoke craftsmanship remains a cornerstone of McMow Art Glass today.

A Legacy That Lives On

The tragic loss of Gianni Versace in 1997 shocked the world. Yet his influence continues to resonate through fashion, architecture, interior design, and popular culture.

Casa Casuarina remains one of the most recognizable residences in the world, attracting admiration from visitors and design enthusiasts alike. While the property has evolved over the years, the artistic vision that defined it continues to inspire.

For McMow Art Glass, the project remains one of the most significant chapters in our history—not simply because of the fame associated with the residence, but because of what it represented.

It demonstrated what can happen when extraordinary craftsmanship meets fearless creativity.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

As we reflect on this pivotal moment in our company’s history, we are reminded that the most memorable projects are often those that challenge us to see new possibilities.

Our work with Gianni Versace helped shape the future of McMow Art Glass, encouraging us to dream bigger, push boundaries, and embrace the idea that art glass can transform entire environments—not just individual spaces.

Today, whether we are creating a custom installation for a Palm Beach estate, restoring a historic stained glass masterpiece, or designing a contemporary architectural feature for a client halfway around the world, that spirit of innovation continues to guide our work.

The Versace years were more than a remarkable project.

They were a reflection of what becomes possible when artistry, vision, and craftsmanship come together to create something truly timeless.
